The Navy has been the lead agency to recover astronauts after splash down since the beginning of NASA. I spent time aboard the USS Somerset to watch the Navy practice a dress reversal recovery of the Orion space capsule, and then came back a year later to speak to the sailors who participated in the actual succesful recovery. The highlight, of course, was speaking with Victor Glover - an absolute amazing human being.
I wasn't a space nerd till I spent time with the astronauts and watched this last leg of the mission. Truly inspiring.
