Let go of nostalgia or loyalty for any brand or products, it is being used against you

The number one frugal tip I can think of is to stop being loyal or nostalgic for any brand or product.

The moment a brand develops a reputation for being high quality is the moment that brand will begin exploiting that reputation by reducing the quality of their products and jacking up prices. That is just a natural consequence of a poor regulatory environment and a low-information consumer base. Exceptions to this are rare (e.g., maybe like LL Bean, Arizona Iced Tea, Ball Jars..., lol I can't think of many others)

So many people I know fall into this trap. Paraphrases below:

"Sony is good quality though, I must have just gotten a bad one".

"They would never switch to glue instead of real stitching, this is Eddie Bauer!"

"Yeah, it's $7 instead of $2.50, but it's better because it's the brand name".

"I'm not going to buy that cheap worthless Ibuprofen, I only use Advil, because that's what my mom used".

You have to assess the quality of each individual product, each individual purchase. This is the only way.

I used to only buy Carhartts for my work pants because they were sturdy and comfortable and came in short sizes, but in 4 years I’ve ripped through the knees of two pairs of them. I have a pair from Duluth Trading Company now that is holding up much better

  I used to buy carhartts. Had one jacket that was almost a string with a zipper. The next two I bought the zippers broke quickly. They made them cheaper. I will not buy anymore carhartts

  The Chinese made Carhartt stuff only have the licensed label, not the quality. My Carhartt medium cold weather snow suit from about 1977 is fine. My Carhartt light jacket in 2024 zipper came OFF in one season!

It's quite strange when you come to understand that destroying a brand is part of a "successful" business strategy these days. It's not enough to have a company that grows profits at 5% a year - while this might be sustainable, investors can earn better than 5% with near-zero risk. They want returns of 20% or more, and to make this possible, you have to grow so long as you can maintain 20% growth. Once growth plateaus, you have to extract your profits via liquidating intangible assets like "reputation for quality" and "corporate goodwill". This is when you sell subpar products/services at the premium price your brand's good reputation allows. This is the sociopathic model that we're struck with today: keep extracting profits until your brand is toxic. If your company survives, this means you've likely left money on the table. True success is when you destroy a company so completely, there's no way it can come back.

  Watched a video on this recently. Unfortunately all true. This has led to confusion in the old car community. One of the top posters in /r/enginebuilding has repeatedly posted about how a lot of lifters are terrible now, leading to cam failures. A lot think it's the oil, because of terrible misinformation circulating.
