Weird but serious question about flip flops, are they frowned upon in italy(outside of beaches)?

I have heard that italians dont like it when people wear flipflops out on the street? Is that true?

I mean besides that the streets are dirtier than avg i dont see why its not ok to at least wear them for like 5-10 minute walks to a nearby grocery store? Or inside?

I stay in the Alps in the summer and wear my flip flops all the time. If I go to a restaurant I’ll put shoes on.

Wear what you want. I think flip flops are frowned upon more in larger cities. Same with athletic clothes, shorts, etc. I totally wear what I want no matter where I go, but I must say that in the US, we sure have become slobs.

I mean it depends where?! Maybe not in a nice city centre but it’s fine in a beach town. Don’t wear flip flops to a restaurant. And please make sure your feet don’t look mangy, seen far too many disgusting men feet this summer. Pedicures are unisex.

When we were in Rome, the garbage collectors wore make up and lipstick and looked glammed up to pick up garbage at midnight, the caribeneri looked like models. Fashion is a thing.

Lol. So who are these Italians I see on my street these summer wearing Birkenstock with nice jean short under the summer heat? I'm assuming when you mentioned flip flop you meant also footwears like Birkenstock. But if you meant those very specific flipflops worn in the beach, I don't think it's nice to wear those outside the beaches.

  Based on using the term flip flops, I'm almost certain he's referring to what you wear at the beach. If it's an American asking that question, they would not call Birkenstocks flip flops.

I only concern myself with that when going somewhere like dinner or a nicer place. I'm not going to put that much thought, or effort, into walking around outside when it's 100 degrees. I'm going to be as confortable as I can.

They are not good for your feet so try to avoid wearing them anywhere except places like swimming pools and, particularly, public showers. Get a decent pair of sandals for the heat.

Inside you mean as house shoes? Cause that's very normal. People wear them outside as well, it's hot. If you're worried about "looking like a tourist", I live in a very touristy town and people will recognise you as a tourist wether you wear flip flops or not.

  I know. You can’t walk on cobblestones in them and it’s just too easy to step in whatever and get it all over your feet. Wear Birkenstocks if you need a thong sandal.

Low effort posts cover a wide range of very common questions that have been already answered in this sub (there are literally 1000s of posts here that answer pretty much any questions possible) such as:

Restaurant/tourist site reviews; what clothing/footwear to bring or use questions; what eSIM or mobile data company to use/purchase; what the weather for weeks or months in advance will be & what to do about it; what are tourist taxes (see the sticky post at the top of the sub); what vehicle-car rental firm (you must have an IDP if you're a non-EU resident) or airline to use/is best (and no, you cannot sleep in any airport in Italy overnight – it’s not safe and it’s not legal) and especially no ITA questions/rants; no posts about the EES (please do some basic research- nobody can tell you exactly how long you will wait); any post related to scooter/motorcycle rentals incl. licensing and/or legal requirements ; moving violation, ZTL & parking ticket fines (you should ALWAYS pay them & yes they take months/years to reach you); bus/public transport fines; when should you buy train/bus tickets & is pricing cheaper if you buy in advance (of course it is); how much cash/funds to bring; posts about medications; anything marriage proposal related especially questions about where to propose in IT; bathroom & hygiene posts etc... Please do some basic research BEFORE posting here to see if your question has already been answered. Posts should be in English only please- use an online translator to post your question.

Pickpocketing/random crime posts/comments aren't welcome- we know it exists everywhere in the world NOT just in IT. And no "Is safe?" questions either- IT is far safer than many other countries in the world. Again- random crime exists everywhere. And please: NO POSTS ABOUT TIPPING!!!

Posts that do nothing but gripe, complain or are just purely negative about people, places or situations will be removed. Bad travel experiences exist everywhere- not just in IT.

Do not combine other EU itineraries or questions with your IT travel plans.

Itinerary posts MUST have accurate travel dates (not just a month/months) with an ACTUAL itinerary (no posts with just regions/cities/areas that you maybe want to stay in/at) plus no vague "sometime in the future" plans. Don't ask the sub's members to create an itinerary or a travel plan or choose destinations for you- YOU must do your own research 1st. Do your own legwork and then posters can comment with advice. Posts that provide 0 details and just say ITALY or give no supporting info will be removed.

Posts that are too broad, unclear, vague, blanket “Where should we go or stay?”, "What's like?" or just plain confusing will need more refinement. We can comment and help, NOT do your planning for you. Include as many details as possible such as: rough budget; likes/dislikes; dietary/other requirements in your post.
