Was reading an article on Medium about 'facts about women's health' and saw this (above) listed. When you think you've heard it all, something worse comes up. Really ruined my saturday afternoon it's so depressing. According to study "price and prejudice" surgeons get paid 30% to 50% MORE on surgeries performed on men (vs women) *in the US*. I guess that explains why women get prescribed way more psych meds than men :((

Not sure where this information is coming from and would be valuable to have the source to read through. As someone in healthcare, codes are reimbursed based on just that- the code. There is no male or female modifier to apply to the codes. I would be very surprised if any difference did not have more to do with the types of surgeries performed- e.g. men get into more physical trauma generally and thus the surgeries are more complex and have codes that reflex that. But the same code with the same insurer, e.g. a TKA, a 2 level laminectomy, etc. should bill at the same amount regardless of sex/gender
As a certified coder I'm in agreement with this. Unless the hospital or whomever is paying the surgeon is paying them more based on the surgeries performed based on gender, then maybe. The insurance sure isn't.
Not being either, in the USA, or part of the healthcare industry, I would expect the difference would potentially come in with the services provided and consequently billed. So in the way that many procedures that are performed on women are done with little or no pain management in comparison to an equivalent procedure when performed on men - this could impact the overall payment structure. But I’m extrapolating. I have zero evidence.
Someone linked two peer review studies in the top comment. They are excellent reads and actually demonstrate that there indeed a sex bias in coding. There’s a good Canadian study that compares a list of surgeries on women’s anatomy vs the comparable surgery on male anatomy and the gap in pay was quite high overall, but varied by province.

Women have double the amount of surgeries. It’s is just a volume thing. Stop trying to divide people asshole

Useless without context. If women are primarily getting lower complexity surgeries that a general surgeon can perform like cholecystectomies and men are getting are getting more difficult surgeries that require specialists/subspecialist like ortho or neurosurgery, then there’s going to be a justifiable difference.
