I made a post on here a little while ago explaining how I set up the suspension for the game but I spent the last month completely rewriting it.
Happy to answer questions here but I'll give a brief explanation of how I set it up.
With the game I'm making I have a roguelite upgrade system so it has to be fast and modular, players can upgrade bumpers, engines, suspension, wheel/tyres, and their winch.

Yeah no colliders just maths, I tried early on with wheel colliders but they don't really work for off road driving.
Some minor clipping but this looks really good. Nice work.
Yeah I actually have some extra dampening to simulate tyre pressure, if I crank it up to get rid of the clipping it doesn't feel as good over the small bumps. But also it's really hard to get rid of all the clipping.

On the clipping people are mentioning, you might not have to touch the damping at all. Drive the visual wheel from a clamped version of the compression rather than the raw ray hit, so the last centimetre of travel exists as force but never as visible geometry. You keep the soft small-bump feel you tuned for and the mesh stops entering the fender. One thing I would ask about the averaged hit normal: how do you weight the rays when only the front two are on a rock and the rest are in the air? Equal averaging is usually what produces that pop as a wheel crests a ledge.

The visuals are actually on a separate class and have their own smoothing, I have tuned it quite a lot but due to how the upgrades work I'll either have clipping into the ground or the car, part of my problem is you can have huge tyres in the car without upgrading the suspension, some combos shouldn't actually work. I weight the rays with the hit distance and smooth it out over a couple of frames, it's not perfect but mostly good.
ok, this is really impressive, especially for a person like me who understands zero on how these systems can be build :) But I must say I really like the vibe, the visuals of this demo.

OMG.. i tried to make a game kinda like this years ago. It was a destructable environment, so you could smash through walls and stuff. Every time a wheel hit a piece of debris the car would fly off the screen. Unity support was no help and I finally gave up after like 6 weeks of trying to buuld constraints.
Great job, it feels as if I'm inside a real system. The mechanics are exceptionally well-executed and detailed.

Why do most games have the tyres clipping through the ground a lot?

hey, looks like diligent good work. I'm very curious about your terrain itself. Is it default unity terrain as base with objects (rocks, bridge etc) on top of it?
I made a low poly mesh with a texture then applied shaders on top, as well as a mesh collider. I think it fits in better than a unity terrain. Tho I do use some terrains for different environments

Good start but the tires seem to clip a bit too much inside the ground and objects. Perhaps tire deflation and better collision could do the trick to feel more grounded. Also, the before/after-format would have been so much better for this video, I'd love to see the difference to what it was before!
My first plan was to do a vertex displacement shader for the tyre compression but the camera is almost never this close so I haven't built it in yet. I have some videos for the before and after, I just liked this format too 😀

What kind of drive feeling are you going for? More of an arcade feeling? Or are you trying to make it feel realistic?
Kind of arcadey but based on real systems. I want it to be more forgiving than a SIM but still function like how you would expect. ? If you know what I mean ?
It really sucks having to mostly redo an entire fundamental system like that (especially on vehicles, my games a vehicle game! :D), intricate system for sure but I think i've seen you before on here. Luckily though, mines exactly where I want it (mega arcade feel) I can see why you went back and redid it, for a game like this, the little things totally matter. All those little rocks and stuff. My game is pretty much mostly flat curves so I only had like 1-2 revisions before its final form. this is what separates devs who go above and beyond, and devs who just wanna push something out. YOU decided it wasn't good enough and I love that and can relate to that so much. Best, Dobert
Thanks so much! I'd been planning on doing it for a while, just had to actually get my head down and do it. Felt real bad for a while because I'd spent 2 weeks without anything working in it then I finally got it working again but it felt worse to play than before. Took another two weeks to polish it and adjust before I was happy.
I love how the burden of realism makes small visual bugs stand out more and more the closer you get to the sun. I was gonna do a vertex shader for wheels on a vehicle controller. This way I could make the tire mesh as detailed as I need it to be. I’m sure if you combined it with a render texture/ortho camera rig, it will be precise enough to be visually pleasing.

Oh yes looks very nice. How many times did I figure things out while developing, to the point where the system was broken. So I had to start over and it was so worth reworking it all the time.
