I just came off an AMA of some random Chinese girl and so many of the comments were absolutely disgusting, and while most were normal I think it reflects a broader view of westerners on Chinese people because none of those comments would exist on a Japanese/Dutch/American girls AMA.
A lot of people believe that Chinese people are either “drones” or “sheeple” for being ok with their government, or that they “somehow enjoy slavery”. They cannot fathom the fact that the world does not evolve around the same kind of democracy they have, and in fact even discredit Chinese people with different views than themselves.
For reference, I am a Chinese American who lives between NYC/Taiwan/Shenzhen. There is almost no difference in my daily life living between those cities, and when I tell people me and my entire family are perfectly fine with the Chinese government they look at me like i killed someone.
In any AMA with Chinese people who are ok with their government 3 things are almost ALWAYS brought up. Winnie the pooh, social credit scores, and Uyghurs. Any Chinese person who says something the other doesnt want to hear is instantly discredited to being a bot. Its as if Chinese peoples own life experiences dont matter UNLEESS it proves the point of some westerner. I have never seen social credit scores, and my family who lives in china hasnt either. We regularly made jokes and talked bad about politicians when i went to school there for a few years. And I have Uygur friends in China living completely normal lives. And no the winnie the pooh ride in shanghai is not banned.
Is it hard to believe that Chinese people support a government that took them from a backwater to a global powerhouse in the span of a single generation? Is it hard to believe that Chinese people have the same basic lifestyle as americans/Japanese/Europeans? Is it a crime to support your own countries government even though it does things that other countries dont like?
I stg sometimes people will only be satisfied theyre talking to a “real” chinese if they say something like “yeah im a part time child labor enforcer at the local torture gadget factory and i wake up everyday to the lashings of my personally assigned CCP agent”.
