A lot of scifi anthropomorphizes machines in general. Everything from robot porn to ghosts in a typewriter has been written giving machines agency, sovereign intent, and real emotion. The truth is that anything we make only resembles these traits because they are a product of the instructions they are given to execute. What we are seeing is the emotion, intent, and agency of the programmer executed by a machine and we are subject to that will through our interactions with algorithms and AI. A machine with no programmed intent will simply sit idle, and this had been proven in testing. It is important to recognize the effect of this anthropomorphization of machine intelligence as fantasy and marketing because it is having real dangerous effects on real people now who are hoodwinked into thinking this fictional trope is reality. Simply, I never imagined living in the future would be so strange.
