What percent of people do you think could correctly identify/define what a vegan DIET is?

I don't expect the general public to know veganism is an ethical position grating bodily autonomy to animals. But after being vegan for 5+ years, I'm consistently surprised how many times I get recommended a cheese pizza or scrambled eggs when I ask a restaurant if they have any vegan options. It seems most people think vegans are vegetarians who don't eat fish.

If you were to do a man-on-the-street style interview in your area, what percent of people do you think would be able to identify a vegan diet as EITHER a diet that omits meat/dairy/eggs, OR a diet that excludes all animal products?

I'm trying to phrase the question in such a way that maximizes the chance people answer "correctly".

I am not Christian (so correct me if I'm wrong), but I think its a bit related to Christianity because they don't consider fish to be animals, like Catholics still eat fish during lent. So Christian (incl culturally Christian) pescatarians call themselves vegetarians, confusing the meaning of that word, thus confusing the meaning of veganism. you have the opposite problem in places w other religious majorities, where vegan can mean 'milk, but no eggs, onions, or garlic'

My grandma often asks me if potatos are vegan, like it has happened multiple times. Not a specific potato dish that may include dairy, just a straight potato.

Depends on the location. Here in Kosovo and Metohija, I'd guess it's in the low single digits as I've been offered salad with cheese, vanilla ice cream (dairy), or peppers with melted cheese inside. And that's from servers who work with food daily. Most of them must think that vegan is just a shorter word for vegetarian. This was in the majority Albanian/Muslim areas, though. I imagine the number would be higher in the Serb majority areas where most people are Orthodox Christian and regularly keep a diet that's "posno" which is almost vegan (they still eat fish and honey during their fast).

Wait.. so vegans eat gluten? Why do so many places make their vegan options also gf? Or assume we require both. I almost exclusively eat gluten 🤪

My brother in law is a literal chef. He was well known in the NYC restaurant scene back in pre pandemic times and could get us into all the cool plant based places like Dirt Candy and Ladybird. (yeah I know Dirt Candy isn't vegan, but they accommodate vegans and don't have meat on the menu.) But he still doesn't quite grok vegan. Like honey once cause a total family drama thing during thanksgiving once. As far as the general population I'd guess maybe 10%-15%. So many people in restaurants seem to think vegan or vegetarian just means lighter foods. So chicken is ok right?

In southern USA, maybe 30%? I live in the city and someone asked me if cheese is vegan. So I can’t imagine it’s better in rural areas. I’ve encountered restaurants that labeled dishes with egg as vegan, so
