it was awarded in may 2023, i would like to return it to them and never mention the credential moving forward

why? That's weird. If you really don't want to associate with the degree, just don't list it. But you'll have a hard time getting a job and employers might wonder what you were doing with those years.

Your diploma is just a symbol of your degree. I can't even find mine. Doesn't matter. Georgetown has a record of your transcript with a notation that your degree requirements were completed in May, 2023. That's the official record of your degree, and it's part of Georgetown's records, where it will remain. If you want to burn your diploma, leave it off your resume, and never mention it again, feel free. Doesn't change reality, but you're the one choosing to use it or not. Georgetown doesn't care. If this is a dramatic move because you're opposed to something Georgetown did or refused to do, you'll have more impact talking to their alumni office about why you don't feel you can be a donor.
Mistakes have been made at every organization you have ever dealt with and ever will. You can't throw a tantrum every time you are slighted by someone.
You don't have to ever mention the credential going forward. If you are insistent on renouncing the degree, you'd have to contact the university to find out if they have a procedure to do so, to determine if that's even possible.
