Hi there! I'm a journalist for BBC News based in Canada. I hope this post is allowed. I'm looking for Canadians who are willing to share their stories about where they have gone instead of the US - especially if in the past they were avid or frequent travellers to the US. Have you discovered something new in a place you would not have otherwise visited if it wasn't for the boycott? How has it changed your travel habits?

I haven't been since 2016. I am taking my second trip to the east coast this year. My best friend and I visited PEI at the end of May and we are heading to Quebec City and New Brunswick in August. I plan in spending time in every province but it will take time. (If the BBC would like to help me, id be down!! How much of our country can we see before my ALS makes travel impossible?) Only time will tell. I will never visit the USA again so im glad I made it to NOLA before the buffoons blacklight lit up the hotel room that is America and showed us how filthy they actually are.
I'm a maritimer . We've done a lot of little day trips in the Maritimes and as far as Ontario . Our big trip in the Fall is to Edinburgh Scotland. With all the direct flights from Halifax to Europe we plan to pick a different European destination every year and eventually do them all. Even when this mess is over I doubt we ever return to the US. It's not a culture I feel aligned with.
I did a road trip in the UK last spring. It's a wonderful destination but wow is it ever expensive. We really get burnt on the exchange rate and tourism isn't cheap there. In spite of that, I would definitely go back. Scotland was wonderful.
We live near Vancouver and used to do a lot of trips that involved US National Parks: Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Mesa Verde, Channel Islands, Zion, Bryce, Rocky Mountain and many more. Now we won’t even do stopovers in the US. Our most recent trip was to Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Before that to Central Mexico (CDMX, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato), New Zealand and Australia, Eastern Europe (Hungary, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria).
Which country did you like the most ? Which one was the most welcoming?
Interesting. You live in Vancouver and have traveled to US for nature tours? Vancouver as well as Banff area to the east are high on my list as an American for a trip. Was going to come this summer but it fell through. Doing my best to support Canada. My family is instead going to Quebec for a week soon.
BC and Canadian Rockies are sooo much more beautiful than anything down under.

I did not travel to the US last time Trump was in power and I have not this time. My big trips have generally always been outside the US, predominantly to South East Asia, Japan, Mexico and Australia. I would go to Europe but it just seems so crowded and expensive. I used to go to the US for smaller trips shopping, or long weekends. The US has a lot of great places but I am no longer just mad at them for electing Trump I am scared of them and for them.
Spain and France. Haven’t been to the states in a year and a half. Used to job fine at least 15-20 times a year.
My wife and I have routinely travelled to the States for vacations. New York, California, Florida and more. I had planned to visit Texas to watch a Starship launch with two of my brothers. That all changed when Trump started his 51st state talk. We have not set foot in the united states and have boycotted all products and services. Our vacation last year was a tour of Nova Scotia and PEI. We sent our daughter to the UK this summer for a month. I refuse to support the fascists to the south.

I’ve gone to Montreal, toured the east coast and had many shorter trips within my province (Manitoba). Going back to Montreal at the end of the month, don’t miss the US at all.
We have travelled locally to enjoy our country. We haven’t gone to the US since 2015 and will likely never go there again.

We did a big anniversary trip to SE Asia this year and trips to Newfoundland, Vancouver, and Quebec City last year. We had originally planned to explore the NE US before the 2024 election but that ain’t gonna happen. Another trip to BC later this year & Scandinavia next year.
We travelled to US almost every year. Last time was in 2023. Most likely we’re going to avoid it until I hear they’re pleasant and stop bugging/detaining people
we used to go south every year for shopping trips ,slightly nicer weather and better restaurants but that all changed in 2016. skipped going 4 years then went once when biden was in and now doubtful ill ever go back. they showed us who they are now and we believe them. no point in granting them with our tourist money when they feel they are kings of the world with no empathy or compassion for anyone else outside their fascist borders.
Better restaurants? What part of Canada do you live it that you need to go to the US for that?
We did Quebec City last fall and Spain and Portugal this past spring. We always have a list of destinations we your top get to for our annual trip, but the US destinations have been crossed out since the Fanta Menace was elected again. I no longer even feel the need to visit some of those places with all the rest of the world to see.
Used to visit NYC once or twice a year, and because my husband was born and raised in the U.S, we made pretty regular trips to visit his large extended family, who are spread across a half a dozen states. No more U.S. visits for us. Not for years. Maybe never again. Instead: Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Italy, Austria, and small-town Quebec, where I have family. Probably going to visit New Brunswick and Nova Scotia next summer.
I haven’t been to the U.S. since the current government was voted in. I’m exploring my own country now. I’ve been to the Maritimes last year and this year Ottawa and Montreal. It’s going to be a while before I ever go south again, even with a new government, if there is one. Fascism isn’t a neighbour I want.

I’m kind of stuck. We haven’t been to our Orlando timeshare in a few years now but this year we’re haven’t anything else planned and the thing is paid for so I think we’re going. We’re trying to transfer the timeshare slot to another country but it doesn’t seem possible on short notice
I had wanted to go to the US Southwest, but instead, I want to go to Alberta and BC. I want to see Calgary and Edmonton, then Banff, and then move on to Vancouver Island. I'm looking at September, if money allows.

I'm currently visiting France and the UK right now. We would have traveled to the US southwest the past few years, but have traveled to Europe instead. And I'm glad we did. After the actions of the current US administration and his moronic minions posting vitriol towards Canada on social media, I can't see traveling to the US again. Ever

We used to go to the states quite a bit. Washington state, California, Montana, Idaho. We had planned to go back to California, as well as future trips to New York and Oregon. Instead, now we travel our beautiful province of British Columbia, we frequent Alberta and Saskatchewan. We’re planning on a coast to coast to coast excursion in a few years, and trips to Manitoba, Yukon and NWT in the more near future.
We used to go to Seattle once a year (we’re from Victoria), Hawaii every few years, Florida to launch for cruises once or twice a year, and we were planning a broadway trip to New York before Trump was elected. Instead, we now travel through western Canada, Tofino replaces the Seattle trips, cruises are over for us, and we’re planning a long trip to eastern Canada next summer. Right now we’re in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, and Belgium for a month. I don’t foresee a return to the US under any circumstances. And of course, we work hard to avoid US products. I haven’t eaten broccoli for 18 months. Most other things I can find from elsewhere, but I do miss broccoli.

Haven’t been in the States since Trump’s first term and may never return at this point. We’ve explored places in Canada - train trip to Ottawa and Montreal, road trip to Sault Ste Marie, flew to Halifax and rented a car to travel around the Maritimes. Last summer, we went to Europe and visited a bunch of countries. This summer, off to a rental cottage on Lake Huron. The world is vast. Even if I never set foot in the US again, I will never run out of places to explore.
Canada. We have a beautiful country and should explore it more.
Last year i went camping for two weeks in killarney, lake superior and algonquin park. This year i went camping in new brusnwick and Prince edward island. There is SO much to see, specially if you love nature. we went swimming in the ocean and in defferent lakes, it was awesome
Went to Montreal (from Vancouver). Originally was supposed to be NYC, but changed my mind. I've been to NYC 5 times, I love it there, but crossed off the list now.
I never travelled much to the US to begin with. I've spent far more time in the UK, Ireland and Cuba than I ever have in the United States. The world is a much bigger and more interesting place than just the US.
American here who has always loved visiting Canada. Was there last summer and noticed far more Canadian flags are homes. It actually made me feel good. I hate Trump as much as you do and I appreciate how you’re standing up to him. Many leaders around the world are choosing to support Trump nonsense. Our family is traveling to Quebec for a week of Quebec City and Montreal soon. Looking forward to it
We've gone to Dominican Republic and within Canada. Exploring our home province of Ontario and we went to visit beautiful Alberta and British Columbia. Planning a trip to trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island next.
I’m planning a trip to Paris. I really would have preferred a trip to NYC, but I fear I may never get there now. I don’t anticipate a real regime change in the US as they have made too much headway down the fascism path.
I used to go a couple times a year. My mom and brother live down there. They are both American. I haven’t been since just before the election. Luckily they are happy to come visit Canada because they detest what is going on there. Right now I’m vacationing in Tofino and next spring I’m going to Indonesia for a month. There are definitely trips in America I would like to do, but I’m not crossing the border until they sort their shit out.

Last July I went on a chorus trip to Wales for the music festival (a week), then I toured the UK to visit uncles, aunts and cousins. In September I drove to the Maritimes and spent two weeks visiting family. Earlier this month, I spent two weeks in Italy, having a wonderful time experiencing the scenery and the food. I have friends in Oklahoma, Maryland and Alabama I'd love to go visit. There was also a technical conference I wanted to go to in South Carolina last year and this year. I miss visiting the States, but there's plenty of Canada to see.
Quebec City, Montreal, Guadeloupe and Mexico. We cancelled a US conference attendance we originally planned and are also watching those conferences now all get moved to non-US destinations. The conferences with s locations we usually attend couldn’t get many people to go this last 18 months. They are not booking those in the US for upcoming events.

I haven't been out of the country, I travelled domestically and booked VIA Rail tickets for the first time. It was a great experience and now, I know more about rail priority (and I think VIA Rail should definitely get it over freight trains). I've also been telling annoying all my friends to travel at least once on VIA Rail. My parents did a whole European tour, which I don't think they would have before this because it's always been easier for them to vacation in the States.

I travel domestically and have explored Asia, Europe, and the UK. I'm never going back to the states for pleasure. The rest of the world has so much more than the states ever offered.
Lots of local travel and a 3 week trip to Japan.
Gave up going to Vegas. Instead have visited France, Belgium, Germany and Italy, and will go to Czechia in a few weeks. Trips closer to home have been Montreal and Newfoundland. Will soon start booking some Porter flights to their Carribean destinations this winter. There are lots of places to see. I watch some Vegas Youtubers and if you know the place well, you can see the difference in the crowds. Of the few people that I know who have crossed the border, it was primarily to join a cruise ship.

I explored Canada and probably will continue to do so. We did Montreal for a bachelor party and that was amazing, we’re looking at Vancouver or Victoria for a romantic getaway this year and are canoeing in either Western Manitoba or Northern Ontario for a week long trip as opposed to the Apostle Islands in the US. For future trips I’m leaning towards checking out Newfoundland and the Yukon which are places I’ve never really thought about visiting that much until a couple years ago
We used to do a couple of days in New York before heading to other countries. We have stopped that since and changed it to either Montreal or Toronto. Not missing New York, I love how clean and safe Montreal and Toronto is compared to its alternative. I would have never considered this two cities until the boycotts have happened. We have been going to Europe with London as our point of contact (because it has so many routes to other countries). Personal travel habits have changed where we would travel anywhere but the US. For instance, if the route takes us to any airport in US, we would disregard it automatically and find another route. It’s almost at a level of a knee jerk reaction. Our son is in grade school and have seen this behaviour from us so I am not sure how this will apply to his adulthood but he knows the climate we are in (just because you can’t really avoid this type of topic living in Canada.)

I’ve never actually been a fan of the USA, but due to a plethora of reasons, over the last 50 years I’ve been to the states many times. The last time was 2023, as my sister wanted to celebrate her 60th birthday in Florida. Since 2023, I’ve been to Mexico, England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Next year I plan on going to France and England, and am also hoping for a sneaky 10 days in either Mexico again, or Cuba, depending on how things are going there. I’ve also been all over BC, from Powell River to Atlin Lake. I’ve already been to Kelowna and/or Hope areas of BC four times this year (I live in Edmonton, AB). I’m dying to see eastern Canada, and now with the USA off the plate, I think I can talk family and friends into PEI instead of Vegas!! I am happy to be featured or mentioned, btw.

We had actually been planning to go to the US for a trip and probably to get married. Now it’s not even being considered. My family used to own properties in Arizona and some of us would travel down to them yearly, those have all been sold. We also used to motorhome throughout the states. Haven’t even been near the boarder since Trumps second term. We haven’t done any trips recently due to cost of living and having a wee one, plus no time off.
Europe: France, Sweden, Serbia, Poland, Spain. I loved going to Hawaii but now it's a no for me.

I've been to Italy and Mexico. Also went to England and Greece. I travelled to Ontario as well. I live in Vancouver so I'm surrounded by some of the most beautiful nature in the world. I used to go to Vegas twice per year for some sun. I'd drive down the coast to San Diego. Washington for shopping on the regular. Never again. That's a lot of money I used to put into the US. I also boycott as many American products as I can.
Europe - Spain, France and Italy. Turns out the costs aren’t so different and there is so much more to see and experience. Majority of my friends have also gone to Asia, particularly Japan and Korea in the last two years. So much to the point where they’ve actually run into people they know while over there.
We went to Argentina in February for 3 weeks. Last year it was Sri Lanka. Next year itnwill be Tanzania and Egypt. There is a whole wide world out there to experience. The USA will not be missed.
