  Your oven's heat is definitely coming from the bottom more than the top, especially being 17 years old. The gas burner sits right under the floor so all that direct heat blasts the tray before the ambient temp can brown the tops. Move your rack to the highest position and double up your baking sheets, stick an empty one underneath or nest two together. That air gap diffuses the bottom heat enough to stop the scorching before the tops catch up. You can also toss a pizza stone or unglazed tiles on the lowest rack and just leave them there permanently, they act as a heat sink and smooth out the wild temperature swings old gas ovens love to throw at you. The macarons on the top rack turning out fine while the middle rack burned tracks with this too. Middle gets more radiant heat from the burner below without the benefit of being far enough away to cool off a bit.
