I wouldn't risk eating a fish after putting any ink on it, even if it says non-toxic. Those inks are not made for food contact and the fish skin absorbs stuff pretty quick. Just take a photo and release it or use the print for decoration only.

I would, provided it’s non toxic, it won’t absorb into the skin quickly enough to worry about especially with the fish being dead. I wouldn’t waste the fish like the other commenter here is suggesting.
Yes that was my thinking. It's says that you should be able to wash the ink out and I believe that it shouldn't penetrate the meat through the scales and skin. Was wondering also if anyone had experience with this

"Non-toxic" craft ink does not mean food safe. Commercial inks contain binders and preservatives not intended for ingestion, and the ink easily transfers from the skin to the meat when you skin or fillet the fish. If you want to eat your catch after doing Gyotaku, switch to food-safe alternatives next time: Squid ink / Cuttlefish ink: Traditional, gives deep black prints, and is 100% edible. Activated charcoal paste: Mix charcoal powder with egg white or a bit of water. It sticks well to the scales, makes great prints, and is totally safe. If you already used regular ink on this fish: skin it very carefully, wash it thoroughly, and make sure your knife doesn't drag ink from the skin into the flesh. But for future prints, definitely stick to squid ink or charcoal!
Thank you! I just stared thinking about doing it, still in research phase :) Do you mix the egg whites to stiff peaks first? And regarding squid/cuttlefish ink do you do anything to it or do you just use it fresh
