What are voeux (school context)

I am watching Flunked on Netflix and there's a scene where someone is searching a database at a public school (appears to be a high school or lycee)

The results screen shows fields that I understand like "N. Identifiant", "Statut Du Dossier", and "Derniere Connexion". However, it also includes a field called "Voeux". There are several possible values on that field such as voeux valides, voeux en attente, voeux annules, etc . So at first I thought "voeux" were majors like Electrical Engineering, Biology, etc. But at least in the Anglosphere that doesn't completely make sense because if you're not accepted to your major/program... typically you don't still enroll and attend the university (maybe it's different in France)

In this context, what does voeux mean?

I read the webpage Parcoursup "Foire aux questions", which discusses how to apply for a program, but I'm still slightly confused.

"Voeux" seems to be "application for admission" yet it's somehow different from "dossier candidat" I'm just not sure

So two minutes later they said in the English translation, "student 'wish lists' have been deleted" by a hacker. Now I'm back to square one wondering what in the world a wish list has to do with a school application? A wish list (voeux) is something you send to Santa Claus or a list of "nice to have features" when you're searching for a house to buy...

  Typically schools receive more applications than they have spots available. Students apply to multiple schools in their last year of high school in the hopes of getting accepted into one. A wish is simply a school application.

In France, at the end of hight school, we have a system call "Parcoursup" to decide where we are going after that. On Parcoursup you make different "voeux" for the different formation you want, and then they decide if they accept you or not.

On parcoursup (a site where students find schools after high school) students can select a limited number of schools to “apply” to. When they indicate a vœux, they pick that school as one of their choices.

Parcoursup is the platform for highschool students to apply to higher education (it's also used by some students who want to change path within higher education). You submit a list of “wishes”, that is schools, universities or formation that you wish to integrate. You have a list of wishes (I believe it's 10 max, but for example a Bachelor in Math can count as the same wish (2 sub-wishes)). You first submit wishes, then you have to fill additional information (for example your grades, recommendations from your teachers, a written text to say why you want to join this specific school, stuff like that). Then, later in the year, you receive replies for each wish: “Oui”, “Non” or “En attente”. If you received “Non”, it means the formation believe you don't have a sufficient level. If you received “Oui”, that means you can join the school/university. Some people receive multiple “Oui” replies and have to chose. If you receive “En attente”, that means that you're on wait. Some people who had better grades than you (or more motivation depending on how the school ranks applications) have received a “Oui”. If enough of them accept another formation, you may eventually receive a “Oui”. You're on a waiting list. It's a bit complicated to explain (it's hard to understand for everybody, but I could probably have done better). The word “Vœux” means something that you wish for, something that you hope will happen, but also something you want (it comes from the verb “vouloir”, to want). The word “candidature” could have been used. I think the difference is that “Vœux” sounds like you're not in charge, you just have your grades/history, and the platform tries to best accommodate you. “Candidature” would make the process way more involved, where you try to do you best and not just tick a box on a website. But both would work.

In most cases a vœux is a wish, so yes in school context it’s your studies wishes, what you want to do after le lycée or then after la prépa or la licence etc.

Like Santa wishes but Santa is Parcoursup 🧑‍🎄

In that cases your wishes for something, a certain school, a certain course... It can also be used as best wishes.
