Wait until you hear about the guys who use dogs for bear hunting. some states allow it, some don't. it's been a thing for generations, specially in the south. my uncle used to run hounds for deer back in the 80s before the laws changed here.
My dad grew up doing it. Stopped right around the time I was old enough to do it effectively. Hard to find the right place anymore, and there’s a lot to it.

I’ve done drives before but it’s difficult now. The land I had access to has been sold off and split up so finding a large enough area or even just to have access is pretty much impossible.
Here in Sweden it's the most common way to hunt moose and also roe deer I would say. We hunt most species with dogs actually and I'm sure you'd find tons of good information and tips if you want to reasearch it.
I'm not a fan. The property next to me hunts with dogs and they trespass on my property all the time. Gates, fences, no trespassing signs, it's all meaningless for them. It's the same excuse every time: "I'm just looking for my dog, the dog doesn't know property boundaries!"
Where I live the DNR says we should shoot dog harassing wild animals. Especially game animals. Only exception are licensed/permitted hunters running dogs. And they cannot trespassing without risk of losing their animals.
Illegal in WI and sounds unethical to me. I would not even if it was legal.
I use a labrador for deer indicating and follow up, as a team me and Barney take 50-60 animals a year here in the UK.
Grew up riding around with my papaw in Mississippi while him and his buddies ran their dogs. Deer were way less plentiful around here 30 years ago, so it was about the only way to see one. I don’t think I ever saw one get killed in front of the dogs and looking back I’m pretty sure most of those old men just liked to get up early, drink whisky, drive back roads and talk shit over the CB. Good memories.

Love it or not, it’s 100x as much fun as hunting in a stand. My grandfather was a breeder of rabbit and deer dogs and my father actually brought four Walker hounds with him when he went away to college. It was a way of life. When you hear the dogs barking and moving closer and you’re trying to figure out when something is going to flash in front of you for a shot, you’re heart starts beating around 1000 beats a minute. It’s hard to go from that to sitting in a tree stand.
I agree with you. I’ve done it with friends and it’s really fun, but it’s more of a social club type thing. It’s not really my thing and I won’t commit the time and money into it, mainly time. If I’m going to spend a few hours in the woods I’d rather just hunker down in a spot I theoretically should see deer and relax than trying to actively coordinate where the dogs, deer, and myself are moving.
I used to but we used walker hounds and they have a tendency to run deer into the next county if you can't head them off. Clubs still do in Virginia but for me I'd rather be in a stand in the evening still hunting instead of trying to round up dogs. I'll use a Bassett on a lead to find a wounded animal but that's the extent of my dog use these days.
💯 tracking dogs on a blood trail are different. I'd be happy to call out a dog tracker to find a wounded animal.

It’s very popular here in Nw Florida where I live lots of public land huge tracts. I don’t hunt deer with dogs myself though.
Here in Idaho it is illegal to hunt deer with dogs. That is only legal for bear, Cougar, and some small animals like raccoons.
Very much a huge thing in South east America. But it’s only hunt clubs that do it on private property. You should not run deer with dogs on public property.
I'm sure that's effective but... The dogs are the only ones actually hunting. You are harvesting. Might as well drive to the butcher shop and buy your meat. /shrug Hunting with dogs is illegal here and should be everywhere imho.
It's not really a thing in Kentucky anymore nor I think Tennessee, hasn't been for a long time. Grew up hearing from papaw they did it wayyyy back in the day though. I think then it was more a sport of the Southern aristocracy so to speak. Now dogs for coons and rabbits 💯, and they use dogs on bear in Eastern Kentucky. It's still a pretty sustained tradition in the Deep South though. I've met guys from Mississippi and South Carolina that still do it. I'm not opposed to it, I support the tradition of it. Never done it though, so I can't personally attest to if I enjoy that style of hunting.
