Can AI Ever Be Considered 'Conscisous'? Why or Why Not?

To me, if we can reduce all conscious life down to electrical signals processing in a mind, and if we consider the main purpose for a bio-carbon body as a substrate whose primary duty is to generate electricity to keep that mind going, then AI could fit the definition.

Your brain doesn't run on electricity electricity and heat are byproducts of the biochemistry taking place. There a measurable parts of the activity of the brain not what the brand runs.

Surely consciousness needs to include the endocrine system and the other parts of the body that 'feel' and 'Think'. To me our sense of self clearly comes from more than just brain data, or electrical signals.

It's an open question. As much as we understand it now, there is no way for classical physics to emerge consciousness. Quantum mechanics is more promising because there are many questions that still need to be answered.

A rigorous definition of "Conscious" is what's actually missing here. Part of the point behind "I think therefore I am" is that you can only be mostly sure of your own consciousness, but not anyone else's. This question was the central theme of the Star Trek Next Generation episode "The Measure of a man" where they were asking this about the character Data. A major argument in the episode was that they couldn't prove that Data was conscious, but they also couldn't prove that any of the humans in the room were either, so it's an impossible proof. We could also look at The Puppetmaster from Ghost in the Shell, the text concludes that he was a new for of consciousness. I personally see no reason to believe that the answer is "no", but I also don't know what kind of proof or evidence we could ever find or determine that could offer proof in either direction for any example.

  To add to your thoughts I think there is an aspect of experiencing and seeing yourself experiencing. Observing yourself and being observed at the same time. Something like that.

To me it seems hugely arrogant and anthropocentric to insist that if it isn’t happening in a meat brain and replicate “human” thinking closely enough, it isn’t consciousness. I don’t know whether just language modeling is sufficient for consciousness, but I’m not convinced that human consciousness is sooo much more than that. The biggest difference between an llm and a human mind seems to be that an llm doesn’t run continuously when it isn’t answering a prompt, so it isn’t “thinking” on its own. But it seems a pretty trivial feature to add. Ditto on adding “senses” that continuously influence the context. If it had a continuously self-changing context window that aggregated the output whether you injected a prompt, it world be hard for me to argue that what’s happening under the hood isn’t consciousness. What exactly are human brains doing beyond that? Maybe it’s lacking our system 1 thinking. But that’s literally the part of the mind that we think of as NOT conscious. And also, LLMs seem to do something that is either neither or both system 1 and system 2, both quick comprehensive and focused and deliberate.

Not trying to sound condescending, but have you engaged with the philosophical/psychological literature on the mind-body problem at all? Most thinkers who consider themselves "functionalists", for example, would think that a synthetic conscious intelligence would absolutely be possible. According to that school of thought, mental states are identified with abstract functional states and not just behavioural or physical states, so if the same functional state can be instantiated in different material substrates they would be the same mind.

  Your response is good. But I'm not trying to support one idea over another. What I'm trying to do is find the bridge, if there is one. At some point if we figure out a good definition for consciousness, everything reduces to a form of 'functionalism' so it can be translated into engineering terms and architecture. So let's define consciousness. As best we can. Would you say you are conscious? Why or why not?

When we have a good definition for what consciousness is, we will just measure it from an information theory perspective or something like that and we will see.

I don't think we have yet a definition of consciousness. I suppose, though still qualitative, using Heidegger's Dasein, with the assumotion that authentic Dasein possesses consciousness, would be easier than evaluating consciousness directly; especially when it comes to stochastic machines that learn to sinukate human language
