I think we’re putting too much focus on what tools are best. Working with Penpot is perfectly fine and not an issue for your career at all. You’ll probably carry over some knowledge from Figma and will get the hang of it quickly.

I recently got a job offer with a gov agency therefore they are using penpot iso figma due to better security control.
I have never used penpot but looking to explore later before starting. I wanted to gather any tips or advices from anyone here that had the same transition and how their team handled it.
A friend mentioned that your career maybe in a disadvantage if you use penpot now instead of the latest design tool. Any thoughts or anyone went through a similar route? Thanks 🙏🏻

I agree with this sentiment. If your design skills are in place you can switch between tools and adapt within a week or so. And if you apply to Figma-focused jobs in the future, you can tell them that your skills and knowledge are transferable. I did a phd for 7 years. Before that there was no Figma. I still got hired after the phd by a tech company who wanted me to use Figma. With some tutorials and familiarity with other canvas-based design tools I managed to catch up in a very short time. Nobody ever questioned my Figma skills since then.
I would love to have a team that works in penpot. 100% learn and then start using a coding agent to build out custom features for yourself. It’s really powerful getting to work with open source tools, and showing off how you make custom tools for your design process would definitely help in the job hunt these days
