Xmid pro 2+ bomb proof pitch

I'll be setting camp pretty high up in a couple weeks 12,000ft+ (WRHR) and I just ordered the xmid specifically because of it's storm worthy reputation.

What pole length ya'll using to keep the wind from digging in? Any other tips for how this pitch will deviate from a my last setups like the lanshan 1p pro, GG The one and Arches 2p(oversized standard lanshan design)?

I'll be expecting it to withstand 50-60mph winds (not everyday, but common enough in two of our planned sites). I understand it can be a little difficult to get the tension right if you are not used to it. Is this the consensus by xmid users or mostly coming from people who have the xmid for their first trekking pole tent? I know there's a lot of first time TP tent users that made the jump just for this tent. I wanna make sure I have it down, a pitch failing in that environment would be just peachy.

In that vein, any tricks to testing a tents pitch without having those wind speeds available to me before I need to rely on it?

You do not want to camp in 60mph winds. Even if your tent survives you won’t be sleeping.

  No, it definitely wouldn't be ideal. More than likely it won't be like that. To be clear, I have camped in 55mph sustained winds before. Just that tent was supplied by a guide, was like $1500 and weighed a ton. I'm simply increasing the storm worthiness of my setup and would like some suggestions from people who have used this tent in the far end of its capabilities successfully. It's never ideal to camp in extreme weather yet it happens.

  Lol I'm not up there. I just don't have anywhere to find wind like that before then. Of course I'll pitch it several times.

50-60mph winds is 4 season tents territory. For the xmid the best pitching ressource is the official video IMO and then you need some practice. The key is to have a good and tight "4 stakes" pitch. And not a loose / wonky core pitch and then trying to use guylines to make it good, it doesn't really work.

  Yeah it's definitely not something i will plan. I will be pulling weather reports via satellite and monitoriing baro etc. to avoid intentionally getting into that wind speed territory. I will only be utilizing those campsites if the weather reports signal a much more calm experience, and I can find some solid wind breaks. I have planned campsites below tree line for each night if called for. The possible extremes for weather there just made me uncomfortable with my other tents. They would not be feasible for even the occasional gusts around those speeds. Not to mention just how fast the weather can shift up there. Appreciate the advice. I'll aim for a getting a crisp 4 stake pitch before I start playing with the others. I'm gonna be that guy who will have his tent in his front yard for several days 😁

The biggest thing with getting a good pitch is making sure you stake out a nice taut rectangle. If it's a diamond/parallelogram after staking out, you won't get a good pitch after the poles are in. Regarding the wind, I would use longer stakes and rock anchors, if possible. The X Mid is a big tent and acts like a sail in the wind. It comes with 2 guy lines (one on each peak), but there's a few spots where you can add more. I had my X Mid out a couple of days ago in some wind. Nothing like what you're describing, but the whole tent was flapping and shaking enough that I was a little concerned.

  Appreciate the concise and helpful advice friend 🙌 More than likely i won't even experience a moment of wind like that. I'll be on my go/ no go metrics include site availability of wind breaks etc. I just knew even 1 or 2 gusts like that would shred my other tents before i had a chance to do much of anything about it.

That tent in that wind will struggle. That’s 4 season tent conditions. For “normal” extremely windy conditions I stake every guy out point. There are 14 or 16 I think? This has gotten me through nights when everyone else’s tents went down, but I was using the 1p. Not sure if the wider 2p would’ve survived.

  Lol yeah I'm not planning for that to happen. I wouldn't pitch knowing that it will. ObV weather reports and monitoring will come into play for go/no go decisions on the campsites daily. Just didn't feel comfortable knowing that the gusts up there on the divide can easily push way, way past the limit of the lanshan without coming anything close to their max. Supposed to be an awesome top of the world kinda camp site, but it's heavily reliant on good weather windows.

The wind you describe is pretty harsh. You might be okay but might not. Honestly for that altitude and wind you need a more robust 4 season tent. Likely a hillenberg. That or look into slingfin. If it goes to shit with an x-mid you might be really bad off. Honestly there is a point where being ultralight gets ridiculous and impractical for some challenges. Just my 2 cents, and Andrew Skurka :)

  Normal wind conditions for august are 5-15mph. Sustained winds often stay below 5mph on particularly calm days. Afternoons gusts typically stay below 20-30 mph. Buuut, rare and extremely severe summer storms here can have localized short lived wind gusts over 50mph. That doesn't sound like I need a samaya. Sounds like I need a tent solid in the wind and to drop to the treeline if a freak storm is incoming 🤷 the majority of the people who do the WRHR are using UL or lightweight kits. They're not rocking 4 season mountaineering tents. The xmid is very commonly used on WRHR. Literally if you ask AI for a tent recommendation for the WRHR it says xmid, ultamid and solomid. If you have any input on my actual question, I would love to hear that.

You are going to use more than 4 stakes.

Lots of good comments from others, for the pole length - this will vary depending on how to the ground it is pitched. You’d want to set the corner cords short so it’s pinned right to the ground, then extend the poles firmly until the fly is quite tight. It’ll end up around 124cm but don’t look at the numbers - just get it tight. And of course use rock solid stakes and all guylines. As others have said, these winds are pushing it. I think it can survive but you wouldn’t get any sleep and it’d 4 season rated tent territory.

  Perhaps I oversold the chances of 60mph winds. To be clear, it's a common camp site on the WRHR and I've seen trip reports of camping here in lanshans. But I also have seen a GG the two (the tent I did have) that collapsed under an unusually strong gust in the middle of the night. Hence my urge to move to a more storm worthy platform.

  I've seen a few trips reports/reviews of people using a couple mods to survive heavier winds. The ones I've seen so far like doubling up on peak guylines, using larger stakes and stacking a flat rock with 40-50 lbs of stones over it on them seem to increase stability. Any other little tricks you've heard of?

Modify where you plan to spend the night: up high on the WRHR you can still find sheltered locations, often by moving behind some sort of cover and keeping your exposed profile low. Also, pretty easy to just keep walking to find better camping: if it’s 60mph in a Xmid, you won’t be sleeping well anyway…
