I'm a US citizen, I work a remote job for a B tier tech company (like Microsoft/Amazon level) and I live in NYC. I have 3 YOE. I'm willing to move outside the US, but I'm not willing to move to the Bay Area or Seattle, I hate it there. I really would not like living anywhere I need a car.
Is it possible to get interviews in cheaper markets, like Mexico City or South America? I don't speak Spanish but I'm willing to move to those places for a few years. I don't see hiring ever coming back to expensive areas like the US.
I have passed Google's technical rounds before but didn't get an offer as the hiring freeze happened. They have not ever asked me to interview since, that was over 3 years ago.
Do they have an office there? Are they hiring? If the answer to these questions is yes then it's not impossible.
It’s impossible because there’s so few slots and they might not even be filling them when people leave. And any opening they do have would probably just be internal transfers because so many people would rather be in NYC than in their primary areas on the west coast (and even in those places they’re barely hiring)

They've been B tier for a long time. Microsoft is very low pay but used to be very stable. Amazon is great when you're a junior but seniors can do better

Acting like Seattle or the Bay Area are walkable the way NYC is is completely absurd. San Francisco is horrible because of the hills and the fact that there’s so little to even do, but the rest of the Bay Area is actually even worse and literally requires driving.

Compared to NYC, Seattle's walkability is severely lacking. I think even most Seattlites would agree. In the Bay Area, only San Francisco and parts of Oakland and Berkeley (very small areas) are really walkable. My point is that you really need a car to get around Seattle or the Bay Area.

It was always hard to get in there and today it is probably 10x more so. I think having an advocate for you inside the company is the best bet or working for a company that gets acquired by Google (assuming you are not laid off in the process).

Of course it's possible. The office is in Chelsea. If you find a place within walking distance it'll be a $5000/month shoebox tho. Not unlike the Bay Area, you'll likely have to commute ~1h to afford the living cost. It's just a subway instead of driving. At 3YoE, target L3/L4.
It’s not possible to actually get an interview or offer there, unless you’re like best friends with a hiring manager or something Also L3 pays 200,000 in NYC, L4 pays 300,000 and average rent in Chelsea for a studio is 4500, which is completely affordable at those compensation levels.
There are lot of other tech companies in nyc that pay equally good or better. Why not try those?
There really aren’t many and those companies are similarly impossible to get into. The ones that definitely pay more like quants are even more impossible than Google obviously
Oh god it’s Amazon. Work on any refurbishment plants recently? Would say tho that Amazon is still annoyingly A tier or S tier because of its size. Its(dearth of) employee benefits don’t make it any less huge or influential. Unless you’re talking about in rankings of companies to work for, which would be putting multiple mid tier and small tech and finance companies at the top tier not even close to just the FAANG or MANGO or AI labs.
It’s obviously B tier because everyone hates it, but I’m actually not at Amazon. But most of the people at my company are ex-Amazon, so that’s how I know we’re the same tier.
Only L3 and L4s think this way. Senior and up its a pressure cooker for every company and you learn to grow up and evaluate by role and not the brand
