Depends what you will use it for. If you need a good headphone preamp i would go motu m2 for example. If you just need it for in the daw stuff the difference would be minor

If music making is just a hobby with no immediate plans to take it further, just go for the 2i2. Those are decent enough. You can always upgrade at a later stage.

I'm a happy 2i4 Gen2 user. If I was flush with cash, the MOTU seems like an upgrade. Any difference in preamps/ADC won't matter if you mostly use it for playback. I'd also wager you could get the full $50 back if you change your mind later and also sell it

$500 on a used truck? Or $2,000 for a brand new Corvette? A lot depends on HOW you drive and WHERE you plan on driving to. (How important is a headphone amp to you? What generation is the 2i2? You plan on using TWO sets of monitors? They gonna connect by TS cable? etc. etc.)

Scarlet 2i2 is a more than capable interface for your average home setup. Just get that and save your money for other things. Unless you are running $2000 top end speakers in a treated studio, the "preamps" are not going to matter.

I would be wary of a Scarlett earlier than Mk3, and Mk4 offers some nice improvements worth the money. And since the Mk4 costs $224 I have no idea why it's not being considered. I think it's a weird either/or question in general, and OP tells us nothing about what it would be used for, or even which 2i2 he's looking at. If all you have is $50 get the Scarlett. If you have a $200 budget a new interface, with warranty and better specs has its advantages.

you don't need a crazy interface to make a crazy track. also, my hardware performance exponentially increased when i stopped using the ASIO drivers for some reason. just fyi for anyone else who it may help. (i'm on windows)
