Correction: trust isn’t ‘just’ built by information…
I am talking about this form of trust not all trust in general.
I have spent a lot of time observing conversations. I observed not just what people say but hoe people make each other feel while they are speaking, and one patterns keeps show up. Two conversations can have almost the exact same information, while one makes you feel understood and connected and the other leaves you emotionally drained. The reason is because trust isn’t built by information but by safety and most people think that trust comes from honesty. Yes, honesty matters but honesty alone isn’t enough. Someone can tell you the truth in a way that feels judgmental or dismissive and another person can tell you a difficult truth while making you feel respected. The information is the same but the experience is completely different.
Our brains are constantly asking questions like: is this person actually listening? Are they trying to understand me? Can i disagree without trouble? Most people never ask these questions consciously but their nervous system answers them automatically and the answer determines whether trust grows of if distance begins.
The question is; have you experienced any situation where you felt trust, distance or both?
