Will US customs flag me if I don't have a hotel reservation for the first night?

I think the paperwork when you enter most countries will ask for your accommodation in the country, but it's often an awkward thing when you plan to move accommodations a ton and the paperwork only asks for one address. If you plan to book a hostel then make sure you have proof of that booking. I usually provide contact info for my first accommodation on the paperwork, but given the US's current uh situation hopefully you'll get some comments in here from recent non-US-citizens who visited the US recently and can provide perspective. Sorry for the extra stressful bullshit you've gotta worry about visiting the states these days

Not a good place to go for tourism. They're kidnapping and disappearing their own citizens off the streets for fun. I wouldn't like to be a foreign non-white non-man there right now. Not only will they likely flag you at customs, they'll probably escort you into a back room and question you without access to basic human needs like water or a restroom and question you for hours. This is the standard of their current regime. I cannot fathom why anyone is traveling their voluntarily right now. Stopping giving them your tourism money. You are funding their domestic terrorism and international partnerships in genocide and other war crimes.

  I just visited washington DC and NYC with my boyfriend in June. I was lucky nothing happened to us. Just wondering what would happen this time if I travel solo. I did it twice 8+ years ago and it was fine

  While it is a time of heightened risk for outsiders in the US now, and I'm welcoming the chance to move out of the US pretty soon as someone who grew up there, I don't think the US has reached the point yet of "don't travel there" warnings, more like "use increased caution."

Do you already have your visa? My Googling is that this is British National Overseas passport doesn't have visa free access to the US, so you already will need a visa. Do you have some other nationality that would grant you visa free access to the US?

Wdym you’re not sure if you’ll be detained or granted entry to the US? If you’re worried to the point of not getting in, then why are you even going?

In my opinion there’s 2 options here:

Book something for the first night and go.

Just don’t go at all if you’re scared of being denied entry.

I strongly suggest you avoid doing this. Having hotel bookings only valid for later parts of the trip where the free cancellation applies even after entering the country is a known scheme in unlawful migration. You get a cheap ticket, book 14 days in the Hilton, dress nicely and then just cancel it all after passing customs, now you are free to work. Get a multi-bed dorm room for the first nights, it does not cost much. Triple check everything applicable around migration and visas, perhaps contact the US embassy in your country. Come prepared with all documents ready and be nice to the customs agent. I have heard people being denied entry and sent back for way less, and not under this administration.

I have traveled the US dozens of times and usually never have any hotel reservation as I am staying with family or friends. No they will not detain or deny you for not having an accomodation booked unless you give them a good reason to do so.

Yes. If I recall correctly, non-citizens are required to inform US customs of the first address they’ll be at in the U.S.

They don’t know your hotel situation. They might ask and you can tell them the truth, offer to make a booking right there if they insist for the night of. However, if they ask, show them the reservation you have for hotel. Don’t over answer.
