His public defender has previously said Muslim has a history of severe mental illness and substance abuse.
So this is a license to kill now? Seriously, he was given only six years and out after two? Just two?? They better start dropping these people off at judges doorsteps when they get released.
I hate this emotional, lazy, reactionary take to everything that happens.
You're basically saying we should rip up the Constitution and and put people with severe mental illness and substance abuse problems in prison forever.
God forbid we actually try to prevent people from developing mental illnesses and substance abuses in the first place and actually try treating those who have already developed these issues without locking them up in a cell for years (I wonder what could go wrong there?).
Judge having a suicidal empathy. I am bored of this style.
Different rules for them.
A homeless man with a mental health condition who's been shoving and punching old people should go to jail forever? Active lack of empathy
It's probably more that our prison system is garbage at reforming criminals.
Reformative Justice holds the rest of society prisoner unfortunately.

I don't think we should give too much weight for what public defenders put up as defense arguments. They're doing their job and sometimes that goes against even their own morals. Its up to he judge to not buy that arguement.
The article quotes the attorney as saying this. You're the only one citing it as any kind of excuse.
He shoved three people and the judge sentenced him to six years in prison. What do you think the appropriate sentence is for shoving three people? Additionally, the judge only issues a sentence. State law and parole boards decide when the convict is released. Him being released in two years is completely out of the judge’s hands. The system needs major reform, but I personally have a hard time placing any blame on the judge here.

Our country failed him long before things got to this point. But hey, let's defund our education system more.
His parents failed him
Learning algebra was never going to help this guy.
In California poorer school districts get funded more per student. For example at Oakland unified it was over $28,000 per student in 2024-2025 one of the highest in the nation.
The country failed millions of others yet I don't see them targeting elderly Asian women with violence.
America's education system is one of the most well-funded in the world.
In 2019, the United States spent $15,500 per full-time-equivalent (FTE) student on elementary and secondary education, which was 38 percent higher than the average of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries of $11,300 (in constant 2021 U.S. dollars).

The defunding mistake America made was defunding asylums.
Countries like Norway and France don't just let violent mentally ill people roam the streets.
I dont remember learning in school that assualting elderly ladies was bad....I picked that up somewhere else, gee, I wonder where?

I get what you mean, and I think he needs help, but also, like... a lot of uneducated people aren't out there randomly assaulting old ladies. In fact, lot of uneducated people are out there making more better for old ladies with just basic respect and kindness. But I get what you're saying. Prison time won't do anything to help him, which is awful, because he really does deserve the chance to grow and change and heal to the point that he doesn't have this kind of violence in him. The process has to be humane and empathetic and would probably take a long time, and I hope one day we live in the world where that's possible. But there has to be something done to protect the community from people like this. In the current system, it's a no-win scenario, and I tend to fall more on the side of prioritizing the safety of a community and helping victims than I do rehabilitating violent people. And it really does make me sick to my stomach to have to make decisions like that, but what else are we supposed to do?
Prison time for him will help the rest of society
He keeps targeting a very specific group of people. He absolutely knows what he's doing. Maybe AH should have used "mental illness and substance abuse" as an excuse to get out of his war crimes.
It's the mind of mental illness that makes him specifically target Asians. I think many people claimed a similar affliction during covid.
