529 withdrawal method: to my account or directly to the school?

I've read a bunch of 529 posts on the sub, but I can't find an answer to this one: my son is about to start college and we have a 529 for him. Should I withdraw the funds to my account and then pay the school, or should I have it go directly to them? Does it matter? Is there a potential benefit to doing one versus another?

Makes no difference these days. Withdrawals are not monitored, or at least no one cares. I paid tuition with a points credit card then paid it with the 529.

  Do you mean you reimbursed yourself direct from the 529 and used the credit card statement/receipt as proof?

  In the case of his school, there's a 2.85% fee for credit card use. I had considered using a points card but I'm not sure it's worth it.

Most schools can accept payment straight from the 529; saves an extra few steps and record keeping

I used the direct transfer, as it’s much quicker, eliminates the middle man (me) and seems like it’s a bit self documenting if IRS were to ever care.

I paid tuition directly to the school and withdrew from the 529 to my account for both of my children. Finally finished last year and never had any issues with the IRS or needed to provide any additional documentation other than the 1098T provided annually by the school for tuition paid.

I paid it out of pocket and then reimbursed myself at the end of the year. That gave the money a chance to grow over the year. I was lucky that it grow each year. Just extra savings for the kids once they graduate. Congratulations on your child going to college.

My 529 would only cut a check to the school, the account owner (me) or the beneficiary (student) So tuition and dorm fees were paid by 529 directly to school. As they got older, sorority housing and apartments had to be paid by me then reimbursed by 529. Extra layer of record keeping but never had IRS issue

I work for a college. The only difference on our end (at least at our school) is if it comes directly from the 529, we have to refund back to them if there's a credit for any reason. If you withdrawal and pay us, we treat it as a cash payment, a credit goes back to you, and you are responsible for any tax record keeping.

I’ve done it both ways. I’m pretty sure at the end of the year the 1099-Q reflects your SSN if the funds are sent to you and reflects the students SSN if the funds are sent directly to the school. You’ll have to talk to a tax advisor if there are any downsides to either one, but it’s my understanding it may impact (if you qualify) some Tax benefits like the Lifetime Learning Credit and the American Opportunity Tax Credit.

You will save yourself a lot of tax headaches by having the 529 pay directly to school.
