I(35f) have been with my partner(39m) for 17 years I met him when I was 18. We have been through a lot in life and I would say he had been the provider for most of our relationship he’s happy to have that role while I look after the running of the house, chores, and help with his paper work etc . For the last 7 years I have been looking after my dad who was sick and he passed away in May he left my sister and I a property and huge amount of savings in inheritance it’s life changing money that I was so excited about to be able finally do someone for my partner and I. I wanted to buy our house that we currently rent as my landlord does want to sell. I thought my partner would be so excited and happy that I was willing to do this and set us up for the future but it seems the do the opposite . He doesn’t want to talk about it changes the subject and seems to have no interest in my plans even though it financially makes sense. When I explain to him that I’m nervous to have access to a huge amount of money and want some suppprt in how to manage my finances he shuts off and doesn’t seem to want to help me or even have the conversation . When I tell him plans I have for this money he’s not interested and shuts off and it’s becoming clear that it’s a power shift for him. He’s uncomfortable with me becoming financially independent and potentially buying our house for us it makes him feel inferior when all i want to do is give back tor everything he’s done for me . It’s really opened my eyes to how he has in fact been financially controlling me for most our relationship and when the tables turn he’s freaking out . I really want to own a property and I’m thinking about just looking for somewhere else and buying it and saying come with me or stay where you are ? All I want to do is help us both . Why is he being like this and has anyone else been in a similar situation !
Tl;dr I’m getting a large inheritance pay out that I want to use to financially set up my partner and I in the future but for some reason he doesn’t seem interested and seem insecure over my coming financial freedom .
