  Ship definitely shed a few tiles on its way up, you could see them falling off on the livestream. There were a few tiles painted white for imaging too. Other than the few white tiles the ship had a full heat shield.

  I think you worded your comment poorly and so people are thinking that you are pushing the idea that stars should be visible rather than complaining about other people who ask where the stars are. FWIW, there are stars visible in the lower right at 14 seconds in.

  You're criticizing "where are the stars" facebook posts I hope? Just in case, it can be "sorta day" in space and the sky will still be black. You can see stars easier (there's less light scattering due to the atmosphere) but it doesn't mean it's easy vs. night and whether a camera has enough expose to see it is another thing entirely.

  Space is defined as any altitude above 100km or 50 miles (80.47 km) so yes it was in space. Also FWIW, Starship gets launch on a trans-atmospheric orbit, an orbit of the Earth where the lowest point is still above the Earth's surface but within the atmosphere. Which means its not on sub-orbital trajectory.

During the live stream Tim Dodd was speculating whether they were doing a slow rotation so that the satellites could see the heat shield. Right while the flaps were moving around. Seems like he was spot on again.

  I think they’re helping control rotational inertia. Extending them should help stop rotation, and vice cell versa. Probably not much as they’re not that big compared to the ship, but even a little bit help save propellant.

  Quite possibly a lot of it is just venting, but also because they use ullage gas as RCS propellant it has a much lower specific impulse than hot/combusted systems, so presumably it needs longer ‘burns’ to have the same effect. Also it has a much larger mass than most other things you will have seen floating in space under RCS control (like capsules etc) so will need bigger RCS impulse to effect similar control.

  They already have starlinks with thrusters onboard (and Starship loves to spin) so I think it's simply cheaper to use existing hardware.

  I think shuch a spacecraft may be very complex to develop, but long run if what they say here that they are "testing methods of analyzing Starship’s heat shield readiness" they may end up doing just that.
