Looking for an epic, once in a lifetime surf destination.

My son is about to start his last year of high school and I want to plan an epic trip for next summer to celebrate. He was born with so many medical conditions, had so many surgeries, it was hard to know if he'd have a normal life. Now he's 17, top of his class, and surfs almost daily with me. He received a glowing medical update yesterday from his cardiologist. It's time to celebrate life.

I want to bring my wife on this trip, so we need a nice destination with solid waves. I'm looking to go broke, but I don't know how many more chances we'll have to do a trip like this.

I know most will say indo, but where in indo? Or something completely different? Thanks to all. Mahalo.

  tavarua is the dream, no question. cloudbreak on a good day is something else entirely. if you're really trying to go all out, look into one of the private boat charters through the mentawais too, they'll put you on perfect waves with way fewer people

  Tavarua doesn’t offer much for a non-water sport partner. If you wanna do Cloudbreak, stay at Momi bay resort. You can still get a boat to Cloudbreak it just takes a bit longer than coming from Tavarua.

  I would not do tavarua. It’s pretty fickle and when it’s fun size it gets crowded now that it’s not exclusive.

  Musket cove is really nice. Easy boats to cloudbreak and restaurants and other breaks. Great resort nice restaurant for wife. Hiking, amazing beach.

The Euro experience is awesome, I really liked Basque Country, or maybe Ericera in Portugal. Lots of other stuff to see and do if the surf isn't working out, but also super consistent.

Not sure your skill level or where you are coming from but for solid waves maybe try Peru, Tav, Tahiti, Aus or New Zealand if you are talking about USA summer In those summer months the southern pacific is very active as well as the Indian Ocean

Where are you from? You probably want warm water but there are some epic cold water spots ie. Alaska, Norway.

  We're in San Diego. Cold water is fine, but I'm not sure Alaska works in June/July/August. I could be wrong.

North shore hawaii in fall and winter is so much fun, tons of different spots, waves all day, and there is enough fun for the non surfers as well. Tavarua Fiji, a boat trip to Mentawais, Banyaks or Telos would all be life changing trips as well but prob just you and the son for those.

If you guys are goofy foots go to Peru and get a surf guide to ensure scoring. It’s so consistent and uncrowded down there, if you know where to be. The waves are more B+ than the perfection you could find in Indo, but it’s so cheap and easy to score.

Maldives. Central or Southern atolls to avoid more crowds in north/south Male' atolls. Although Kandooma could be a good option too since there are other waves around and the resort is good for non surfers too. Perfect Wave or World Surfaris have info on all the boat and resort options for Maldives.

How long do you have? If you have several weeks I'd consider South Africa. Epic surf, great food, easy to get around, and really awesome for your wife. If you're on a shorter timetable and have money to spend, Tavarua is an obvious choice.

Playa Grande, Costa Rica is affordable, close to you, and great almost every day. Did 10.days beachfront with my family andy son (12 at the time) sorted 6 to 8 hours a day, with 3 to 6 foot lefts and rights off the estuary. I tried keeping up, but he had too much stamina for me.

Awesome! I can say whole heartededly Tavarua. I convinced my dad to go for his 80th and thought it was a once in a lifetime, well it was so great we went back 3 times. There are so many waves that our whole family had a blast. 13yr old girls on Pools, 82yr old grandpa at Lefts, Rights, Pools. 16yr old son at Cloudbreak. Just go. The setup is so bonkers. My wife liked it enough we tried to pull it off for our 25th anniversary. Couldn't make the dates work. Staying in the island gives u significant flexibility from staying at a neighboring island. U go whenever or wherever u want based on wind and tide which impact things significantly.

Check out Taiwan! Rent a vehicle and head to the far south or east side. July/August should start seeing pulses of typhoon swell, and tons of wave variety. If waves go flat for a couple days you've got an amazing, hot spring-filled island to explore, awesome culture/food, wild landscapes... If $$$ isn't an issue, then yeah, go stay on Tavarua or hop on a boat in Indo or Maldives. I am severely allergic to crowds, and despite having some incredible rides at Cloudbreak, I couldn't imagine making an entire vacation out of it. Maybe surfing in SoCal conditions you to crowds a bit better though.

That time of the year South Africa will be pumping. Flying to Cape Town, drive the coast to Durban, so many good waves. And you will get the African experience with all the wildlife, and plenty of great wineries. Jefferies Bay is a gem, but there’s lots of other great waves. And the crowds are minimal in many places.

For me I'd do j-bay, or may as well do an Africa tour if your heading over! I'd start in Durban and drive down to j-bay, then cape-town, then try hit skeleton Bay?

Look at La point surf website and go check out the surf trip on a boat, you literally chase sea brakes island hoping. You will never surf the same wave, and no one will ever surf the same wave ever again after you by the nature of those waves.

From my East coast perspective you’re already living in an epic surf destination! 😂 but Puerto Rico can be pretty damn good without breaking the bank. Have a killer trip wherever you end up.
