And people still use it as a lubricant, and wonder why stuff breaks.
As an avid DIYer my 2 biggest pet peeves are people using WD-40 as lubricant and duct/duck tape as repair tape. Both are pretty lousy at those tasks.
WD-40 will break free stuff that's stuck. In theory if it's still in there it will prevent it from getting stuck again. But yeah it's not a lube oil
It is stupid that there a actual lubricants sold under the WD-40 brand. They have the original WD-40 and then WD-40 white lithium or WD-40 spray grease. No wonder people are confused.
And also, I see people downright insist you can’t use it as a bike chain lubricant despite 96% of people’s childhoods saying otherwise. Is it the best? No. Does it work? Good enough.
Its literally just a light oil. For 85% of household needs (squeaky hinges, stuck bolt snaps, etc) it works perfectly fine. If it ain't broke, dont fix it.
It is a great lubricant for right now. But you need to follow up with a proper lubricant asap.
The Atlas was such a wild design, so desperate to shed any mass that it ejected its main engines partway through the flight. It spent its first ten years in development hell and fewer than half of its two dozen test flights actually succeeded. Considering the Soviets were having similar problems, it leads me to wonder what might have happened in a nuclear exchange in 1965, when both sides had very effective anti-air systems and highly unreliable ICBMs.
And heard many still run on old software (and need those 8 inch floppy discs).

They were effective against planes, not warheads travelling multiples of speed of sound.
Staging away the engine once they aren't isn't particularly unusual. All practical ICBMs and orbital rockets do this. What's unusual about the Atlas is that it only ejected the booster engines, and not its fuel/oxidizer tanks. The reason they did this was that the designers weren't sure if you could light a second stage engine mid-flight, so they needed to have the sustainer and booster engines lit on the ground. The Soviet R-7 had the same issue, which is why modern Soyuz rockets still have four booster engines alongside the main engine. Once mid-flight engine starts were proven to be feasible, the vast majority of rockets switched to the conventional practice of the sustainer stage on top of the boost stage, with the booster engine and tanks dropped before starting the second stage.
Also worth pointing out that by 1965, the U.S. and Soviets had fairly reliable ICBMs (and extremely reliable shorter range missiles). Their problem was that they were all liquid-fueled, so they needed to keep them in permanent silos that an enemy could fairly easily blow up with nuclear-armed planes, cruise missiles, and submarines. The real breakthrough was miniturized bombs that could be launched from smaller solid-fueled ICBMs, that could be carted around by truck and launched from anywhere. That's when you really started to see the US and USSR building tens of thousands of warheads, since it became increasingly difficult to eliminate any risk of a retaliation after a first strike
The Soviets had hundreds of ICBM's at that point and the US had close to a thousand. Even if there was a 50 percent failure rate that's a lot of major cities wiped off the map. There was nothing then that could intercept an ICBM, arguably there's nothing now that can do it reliably.
It's the absolute best on stainless steel (BBQ, fridge, etc.) as a streak-free polish, besides the smell.
