  Yeah, like I admit I'd have a bit of an adjustment after using Claude for so long, but really I'd be fine after an hour or two. If you can't program without AI, you're not an engineer, just a manager.

  I talk to devs all the time that have been absolute monsters in their careers. They feel the same thing now. I don't think it's a skill issue. I think it's a gambling problem, forced on them by their companies without thinking of the side-effects. I am not anti-AI. I am just pro-human lol

For simple slop in my experience LLMs are fine. But trying to write something specific and hard like say an efficient text chunker with LLMs turns out to be a huge net loss of time. They regurgitate mediocre and working looking code but you can never quite get the 100x-1000x perf lift of just thinking through a most oerfomant solution and hand rolling it. The code will be shorter, faster, easier to work with. So yeah for sub room temperature IQ tasks it’s a huge win and saves time. For anything else it’s the opposite.

Has anyone ever told you that the best programmers are the ones who are opinionated? If you let an LLM write code, and are fine with whatever it spits out as long as it "matches the spec", you're a product manager with extra steps

AI has definitely made me more productive, but I don't think it replaces understanding the fundamentals. I use AI to speed up development, debugging, and boilerplate code, but I always review the output and make sure I understand why it works. The best developers will be the ones who know both how to code and how to use AI effectively.
